INA, Ill. (Feb. 17, 2014) – The Rend Lake College men’s and women’s basketball teams fell Monday night to the Wabash Valley Warriors in the second match-up for the Region XXIV teams.
First to take to their home court was the Lady Warriors. After leading for much of the first half, the two teams tied at 35. RLC’s Jasmine Guthrie (Belleville, IL) led the scoring for both teams at 10 points.
The RLC Lady Warriors started the second half strong, gaining an 11-point difference in the first eight minutes of play. The two teams fought for control of the half, tying several times before the WV Warriors took home the 70-65 win.
Andriana Moore (East Chicago, IL) of WV was the top scorer for the game at 22 points. Other WV top scorers included Tyshee Towner (Aurora, IL) with 11 and Ellie Fruit (Henderson, KY) with 9. Leading the scoring column for the RLC Lady Warriors was Kristina Henley (Metropolis, IL) with 16, Guthrie with 14, and Jamillie Reed (Memphis, TN) with 13.
The loss moves the RLC Lady Warriors to 10-12 for the season and 5-9 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC). They will take on John A. Logan in Carterville on Wednesday before returning home for the last two games of the regular season against Lewis & Clark on Feb. 26 and Lake Land on March 1.
The Rend Lake College Warriors also started strong, but quickly began to fall behind in the first half, ending 13 points behind at 31-44. RLC sophomore Jeril Taylor (Louisville, KY) lead in points at 11 for both teams in the first half.
Though RLC got within five points in the second half, ultimately the WV Warriors took home a 86-77 victory. Taylor continued to dominate in the scoring column, ending the game with 23 points. Other RLC top scorers included Cortez Macklin (Louisville, KY) at 16 and Parish McCullum (Maywood, IL) at 13. Top scorers for the WV Warriors are Tyrone Sherman (Homewood, IL) with 18, Mikeal Donaldson (Columbia, SC) with 13, and Brienne Miles (Evansville, IN) with 12.
The RLC Warriors are now 17-9 for the regular season and 8-6 in the GRAC. They will also play John A. Logan Wednesday in Carterville, and play the remaining three games at home: John Wood on Feb. 25, Lewis & Clark on Feb. 26, and Lake Land on March 1.
